Connaître means to be acquainted with people, places, works, or experiences. Use it for familiarity (for example, I know Paul / I know Paris). Compound tenses use avoir (to have).

Common pattern to watch for

• Connaître + noun → familiarity with a person/place/thing.
  Example: Tu connais ce livre ? — Do you know this book?
• For “to know how” or “to know that” (facts, how-to, clauses), use savoir.
